I had the pleasure of working on the design for this year’s Children’s Hospital Foundation Ice Crystal Gala marketing materials. The Gala is the biggest event of the year for the Foundation. This year they’ve decided to designation proceeds from the event to support the expansion of the Clinical Research Unit at the Manitoba Institute of Child Heath to accomodate an increased number of clinical trials. It’s not often that a client calls me a “genius”, especially when that client is an electrical engineer. However, I was honoured with that designation when I recently worked with the owner of Universal Energy Resources to come up with his new logo and stationery. He had a very specific concept in mind for the logo: create a set of initials for his company inspired by the shape of the infinity symbol. The letters that make up the initials all have very specific meaning in the world of electrical schematics too. I learned a lot about the “language” of electronics while working on this project – more so than even my 7-year-old son has taught me. : )

I was hired by the Children’s Hospital Foundation to design last year’s annual report. Being their 40th anniversary, the CHF wanted to celebrate that number and highlight all the numbers of their accomplishments and achievements throughout the year. The design was based around info-graphics and a fun use of big, bold typography to showcase the numbers. The report also highlighted the children whose incredible stories made them success stories, revealing the amazing treatment and care the CHF can help to provide.

The 26th Annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic is on this weekend at Assiniboine Park. I was proud to have the opportunity to design the marketing materials for this treasured event organized by the Children’s Hospital Foundation. My mom used to sew up well-loved teddy bears for many years in the B*A*S*H Tent (now called the Dr. Goodbear Clinic) and I have taken my own kids (rain or shine!) for a number of years now. My daughter and my own teddy bear made for wonderful models. I found the most whimsical and inviting font possible and chose her gingham dress that to me has “picnic” written all over it. Durango Construction hired me to re-design their logo, branding and brochure. They were looking for a refresh of their current look without straying too far from the original design. I created a look that is bold and dependable looking yet approachable. The branding was also carried through on their new website here.

If you are looking for some hot eats and cool treats, head on down to Ye Olde Chip Trailer, which is located out on Portage Avenue across from Thunder Rapids. The owner wanted the trailer to stand out, so I suggested enormous, oversized graphics of food that will make your mouth water as you drive up. I combined the graphics with retro-looking type to give it a nostalgic beach-boardwalk feel.

Possak School of Irish Dancing hired me to do a refresh of their branding and website (stationery soon to follow). The school had a logo but it didn’t evoke a professional look and feel. The client suggested a shield but didn’t want it to look too rigid. When combined with the Celtic knot and the soft greens, it looks sophisticated but not intimidating. The typography has a modern Celtic feel.

The website has rotating images of the dancers on stage showcasing some of their signature steps. There is also a gallery of images (on-stage and behind-the-scenes) as well as news items so dancers can keep on top of what’s happening at the school and various competitions and performances. The site also has a fully-functioning Members Only section with important information for students and their families.

The stationery was redesigned recently to coincide with a move to a beautiful new office space. A marketing piece announcing the move was also incorporated.

The website was designed with simplicity and elegance. The client wanted to showcase their work to potential clients without a fussy website design taking over. I kept it clean and minimal with ease of use in mind. Visit the site here.
